High water prompts ‘no wake’ order

TRI-COUNTY AREA—Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike has issued a “no wake” order for Keuka and Seneca Lakes. After recent storms, excessive lake water levels have caused concern for additional lakefront property damage along the shore of both lakes.
Spike said Keuka Lake is currently above flood levels and docks are underwater. He said high wakes can cause further property damage, asking boaters to respect the reduced speed “no wake” order.
This order comes in addition to a boaters advisory on Keuka Lake. The advisory was issued by both the Yates County and Steuben County Sheriff’s Departments. The excessive rains and flash flooding washed large amounts of debris into the lake and outlet, making it dangerous for boat operators. Large branches and accumulated debris could be hidden in the murky water of the lake. Boaters should use extreme caution while boating over the next few days and follow all boating regulations and laws to properly exercise good and sound judgment.
